BATH REMODELSBy Van J. Berg Bath remodels offer exciting challenges to Builders and Clients. That's because homeowners have different reasons for remodeling, varying budgets, different floor plans, and different preferences. Homeowners commonly remodel to replace (and to repair) the current materials, replace a shower with a tub or visa versa, add a second sink for the teenagers, add a bath for a growing family, provide an area for relaxation, or accommodate the needs of maturing adults. In any event, it's important to explore the various options available as far as the layout and products available to meet the specific needs. And, today there are more options than ever. For example, · For the master bath, options might include a large shower with pulsating or multiple shower heads; a body spray system; a bench seat; a sauna; a whirlpool tub for two with soft lighting, a sound system, television, and telephone; a wet bar with a refrigerator and an expresso bar; heated towel racks and heated floor; a 42 inch high vanity cabinet with two sinks, a makeup table, large mirrors, and both task and ambient lighting; and a private water closet. · For the more mature members of the family, options might include borrowing some space from an adjacent room or closet or recessing fixtures into the wall to increase the room size; enlarging doors; lowering cabinets and switches; hanging the mirror or medicine cabinet at 40 inches; replacing the water closet with a taller model; remodeling or replacing the shower or tub to eliminate the threshold or constructing a ramp for wheelchair access; installing a hand-held shower head; and adding grab bars. An alternative might be adding a second sink; upgrading the lighting; adding an exhaust fan in the tub/shower to remove the moisture; adding an intercom; adding a tub/shower enclosure; and adding a linen cabinet (taking space from an adjacent area).
