Kitchen Trends

By Van J. Berg

Today's kitchen is a place to gather, relax, entertain, and run the household, as well as to cook. That's why the National Association of Home Builders, Fulton Research, and Home Guides of America, concluded that home owners want large convenient kitchens. Their conclusions were based upon a study of features, products, amenities, and layouts desired by 3,583 potential home buyers. Topping the list of kitchen features and products were ample counter space (95%); double sinks (89%); an area for table and chairs (85%); a walk-in pantry (84%); solid-surface countertop material (61%); and adjacent kitchen and family rooms--visually open by a half-wall (nearly 50%).

Review of various issues of Qualified Remodeler, Builder Digest, Kitchen & Bath Design News, Remodeling, and Fine Home Building provided more insight into today's kitchens. Today's kitchen should also include both area and task lighting; ample storage; one or multiple work triangles; and a command center, complete with desk, telephone, bookshelf, computer, and intercom. Commonly, designers include or highlight two or more of the home owner's unique items to create a personal, comfortable, and functional environment.

Popular design options include:
· Countertops and wall cabinets of varying heights add function and interest.

· Open cabinets or cabinets with glass doors display fine china or collectibles; glass bins store food with a country-look.

· Cabinets are often accented with a unique material, finish, or color.

· Interior lighting and etched glass provide a more elegant look.

· Upper cabinets with a rail molding to display personal items or plants, might be hung below ceiling height; cabinets hung at ceiling height might have several moldings stacked to make a statement; or cabinets might be hung under a soffit with a striking wall cover.

· Powerful designs of tile, wallpaper, wainscoting, and valances often accent white fixtures.

· Appliances, with a variety of features, are both functional and decorative.

· Skylights, garden windows, and windows over/under cabinetry provide natural lighting and openness.
